Abstract

Self-esteem, being a central axis in the way in which experiences are interpreted and assumed, should be considered a health priority, especially in the older adult sector, since good self-esteem allows the generation of emotional strategies that facilitate adaptation to this stage and, therefore, a better quality of life. The objective of this work is to evaluate the degree of self-esteem of institutionalized older adults in the city of Morelia. The research is based on a quantitative, descriptive-correlational methodology, with a non-experimental, cross-sectional design. The Rosenberg scale was used as an instrument. Based on a non-probabilistic sampling, selected by convenience, the participation of 48 older adults, whose age ranged from 69 to 93 years and who were in a situation of institutionalization in the Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (Issste) of the capital of Michoacán, Mexico, was achieved. The main findings reported that two out of three older adults had fair to high self-esteem. Likewise, a relationship was found with schooling, the decision to institutionalize and with the fact that the partner is in a situation of institutionalization. Even so, the results show the need to pay attention to that percentage that is affected by low self-esteem, since being able to face the challenges of old age with greater resources will allow for a better quality of life, thus contributing to lessen the impact on the health sector of what is known as demographic aging, an unprecedented challenge.
